The matchup between the Boston Pride and the Metropolitan Riveters was bound to be an interesting one from the start. Both goalies had not seen the ice in months and the Metropolitan Riveters had not played in three weeks.  The Boston Pride have clinched their playoff berth and were playing their backup keeper.  The Riveters’ goalie was playing her first game back from injury and the team couldn’t afford to lose if they wanted to keep their playoff hopes alive.  The teams were also sporting two of the most gorgeous Premier Hockey Federation jerseys, the cream-colored Boston third jersey (for sale soon, we hear) and the famous Black Rosie jersey designed by Jordan Dabney for Black history month.  The game was played at the Riv’s home rink in the American Dream mall where the camera angles are great but the lighting not so good.

The Rivs came out strong and pressed hard, but Boston, in standard fashion, scored early, off a break away by Loren Gabel.  Surprisingly, however, the Rivs struck back immediately, forcing a turnover in front of goal that Fanni Garát-Gasparics quickly capitalized on.  Loren Gabel almost got a second but was fouled right in front of the goal and the first period ended tied.

The game really got away from the Pride in the second as the Riveters got three past back-up goalie Lovisa Selander, including a beautiful deflection by captain Madison Packer. Boston ends the second period on a power play but can’t get one back.

Finally, Kaleigh Fratkin blasts a shot towards goal on a power play in the third and Sammy Davis scores with a little deflection. Unlike last week, Fratkin’s efforts are not enough, however, and the Riveters’ Kelly Babstock is able to put two more into the net.  The Metropolitan Riveters keep their play-off hopes alive with the 6-2 win.

Corinne Schroeder’s absence loomed large, making it clear what an important role she plays in Boston’s league-leading success.  She was a late scratch and there is no news yet explaining the substitution.  Here’s to hoping she just is getting a well-deserved rest!

The Pride’s next game is home in Boston at Warrior Ice Arena against the Minnesota White Caps on Friday March 3rd at 7pm.  The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.

Note: With their win over the Whale this weekend, the Toronto Six have claimed the top spot in the league. Boston drops to second.
